Fujitsu Debuts 10K, 15K rpm Hard Disks

"Fujitsu Limited announced Monday two new hard disk drives with 10 000rpm and 15 000rpm motors intended for enterprise use. 300GB and 174GB products effectively double previously available capacities for their level of performance and will be available later this year.

The MAT series HDD, featuring spindle speeds of 10K rotations per minute (rpm), offers storage capacity of up to 300GB with 4-platter design. The MAU series, featuring spindle speeds of 15K rpm, offers up to 147GB in storage capacity. MAT series offers 73GB, 147GB and 300GB in storage capacity, while the MAU series offers 36GB, 73GB and 147GB. Both series are available with a choice of two interfaces, Ultra320 SCSI (U320) or Fibre Channel 2 (FC2).

Seagate Technology, a rival of Fujitsu, recently announced its 10 000rpm HDDs with 36GB and 73GB capacities. Seagate’s enterprise class products offer 2.5” form-factor, but lower performance. Hitachi Global Storage Technologies also unveiled 300GB, 146GB, 73GB and 36GB 3.5” drives with 10K motors.

Qualification units for OEM customers will be available from April for the MAT series from June for the MAU series. Volume shipments will start shortly thereafter."
