Sony Ericsson debuts 1megapixel cameraphone

Sony Ericsson has released its first one megapixel digital cameraphone for the European market.
The S700 swivel phone includes a 1.3 megapixel CCD camera with an image size of 1280 x 960, an eight times digital zoom and a 262K colour TFT screen.

Available in the UK towards the end of the year, the S700 also incorporates an MP3 player, and a media player that can capture and stream video clips.

It boasts Bluetooth and infrared data transfer, and supports Sony's Memory Stick Duo removal media format.

Also unveiled today was the Sony Ericsson K700 cameraphone, which will begin shipping in the UK over the next few months.

The tri-band GSM/GPRS phone, which will retail for around £99, has a four times digital zoom, 65K TFT colour display and 32MB built in memory which can store up to 450 still images or a combination of music, ring tones and video clips.

The device also has a built in FM radio capable of storing up to 20 stations, plus Bluetooth and infrared connectivity.

Jan Wäreby, Sony Ericsson corporate executive vice president, said that the phones' 'dual-front' design emphasises Sony's strength in the camera market and Ericsson's manufacturing capabilities.

"People will look for a camera brand when they pick a phone," he said.

The handset manufacturer also unveiled three hands-free products, including the Bluetooth Car HCB-300 which allows multiple users, such as business customers using a pooled car, to share the device.

Three new handsets have also been launched for the American market, including the T237 and T637 and the Z500 clamshell.
