New Server is Coming!

Tired of DriverHeaven being slow? Well, we are too, so we're doing something about it! First off, this is what we've been getting by with for a long time now:

Intel Celeron 1.3 GHz
512 RAM
60 GB Hard Drive

When you have 1000 users online at the same time, that doesn't really cut it anymore. The site managed to run pretty well, considering how underpowered that server was. However, it couldn't last for ever, so now it's time to move up a few notches. This is the new server:

Intel Dual Xeon 2.4 GHz
2 GB RAM
(2) 73GB SCSI Hard Drives

I think you'll all agree that this is a nice server. As of right now, we have just started getting it configured, so we won't be moving to it right away. However, in the near future, you should all notice a dramatic difference on this site. I'll post more news when we're ready to switch over. Until then, just remember that the slowness won't last forever, and that we're working on speeding the site up.

Come on Xeon's get some Opterons in there

[edit] all in good fun, it will be nice to be able to view the page instead of waiting during peak hours

OmG no wonder it's slow. This is the best news I've heard from DH in the last 2 years. I can't wait, especially on days like today when it's almost better to just wait a few hours (or 5 or 6 hours) and come back later..

My favorite site on the net is getting an upgrade whoo hoo!

When the donation thing went up you should of listed the specs of the current server...you wouldn't of needed to say any more.

getting the server has nothing to do with donations because we would still be here in 5 years with the same server if it was down to donations, those things everyone hates did it - ads.

ads dont make alot of money no - certainly not like they used to, but the site makes a fair bit of money each month, due to hits (20 mill+) and hopefully some people clicking ads.

Isn't it also true that if you click on one of the ads, then actually purchase something from that site the ad takes you to, that DH will get more? I was just thinking, if I wanted to try Vonage or something (which I'm thinking about), I would definitely do it by navigating there through a DH ad- then DH would get a little "credit" - or something like that..

If that was the case I wish DH had a NewEgg ad, I would buy everything I get through navigating there through a DH ad- and then that would look good for DH... I'm not sure if everyone knows that or not.. or if that's even the way it works..

But it's definitely worth looking through the ads and where they go if you are planing on purchasing something online anyway, you never know, maybe your purchase could help our site, and it wouldn't cost the person shopping anymore money...
