Lindows throws in the tow - l

Linux distributor Lindows is changing the name of its operating system to Linspire. The company hopes "this puts a halt on the international lawsuits."

Microsoft has been busy suing the company in the US and in Europe alleging that Lindows is too similar to Windows. After failing to persuade the US courts the software giant filed trademark lawsuits against Lindows in Finland, France, Sweden, the Netherlands and Canada.

The case became ever more surreal with Microsoft lawyers claiming that Lindows first changed name Lin--s is pronounced "Lindash" "which bears an auditive resemblance to Windows".

I hate to make this a long 'Quick Reply' but if someone came up with, say MicDonalds and did 90% the same as McDonalds..and you were hounded by McDonalds (still with me) about abusing thier name...would you blame them? Or how about Mal-Wart and Wal-Mart. You're not only confusing the consumer but causing a world of chaos. In this case, they named it Lindows to spite Microsoft - it was cheap and they should have known that from the start.

I should mention that I do not agree to all of Microsoft's marketing/business stataregies, but inorder to get where they are today, they must have done someting (or a LOT of things) right. People often overlook this aspect while they post thier childish rants against Microsoft (and I direct that to no one here - just a general opinion)

I personally

One of the major concerns over MS is the fact that they bundle products with it. Now, in my opinion that makes it a hell of a lot easier for the consumer. XP is a fine example of how easy MS made it for the consumer. You get practically everything you ever need for XP. Built in media player, cd writing software, zip utility... all so very easy. Is this fair to the competition? Well yes? It's Microsoft's OS.

So instead of piggy backing on MS' glory and fame by means of "mimicking" them or suing them. Try making a great product that people would pay for. If people focused the same amount of money, time and effort they used to try to sue MS or complain about MS, they'd have that great product.

P.S - I don't know what Lindows was trying to do. In my eyes, using Lindows was a bad marketting move. It makes Lindows look like a rip off of Windows. For example, would you buy a Sony TV? Or one with a Soni name?
