My good friend @dek from Fileconnect has asked me to tell the community that his server is down and may be down a while due to a Denial Of Service (DOS) attack that happened today.
Warp2search are among the other sites on the same line which are currently affected, lets hope they get this sorted out soon. |

DoS - Denial of Service
In English means - one or a LOT of people have a little utility they run to send a bad request to an ip (or website) but sending so many bad requests that the server being attacked has to shut down. An attack could be something like a Cable or DSL user running that attack program on a dialup 56k user. Obviously the 56k user can only handle so much bandwith at one time, and the cable/dsl user can handle much more. When all the bad requests pile up on the 56k user side...they force that person to disconnect or it disconnects cuz it can't hold the connection anymore. But not many people use dialup anymore and its pointless to attacka dsl user with another dsl user, or cable with cable - considering each has alot of bandwith. However! To shut down a webserver like FileConnect would mean a serious attack, one that must not be taken lightly. I'm glad to hear they are back up and running! Thats not the best way to describe what a DoS attack is, but for those who have no clue, its the best description I can give. |

nearly! make it a liitle more simple! Denial of service opening more connections than a server can handle. so no other connections can be established to that server, there by denying service
![]() edited coz denile dosen't appear in the dictionary

unless your running servers the chances of you becoming a target for a Dos attack are remote, as servers have to accept connections by nature, at home your connection probably sits behind zone alarm etc which prevents a connection being opened without your permission! Home connections are more likley to be used as drones for a dos attack, again if your running zone alarm & anti virus software this is unlikly to happen (unless you allow a program of dubious origin thru ZA) if you are running servers eg webservers your computers are hopefully sat behind a hardware/nix based firewall with port 80 being forwarded to the webserver, & each website set up on the webserver would hopefully have a max connections set. so that any connections above the preset amount would be dropped(this causes the website being attacked to be in dos) but should leave any other sites on the server still operating. ...Hopefully you would notice your site being dos'd and block the ip or ip's being used to launch the attack on your webserver & firewall....This means that your connection will be slow untill the packets stop arriving for that site..think of it as trying to swim across a river with loads of debris in the water, hard but possible....not really a nice situation... if the attack persists next step would be contact your isp to try and get them to drop the packets further upstream... this sounds good while i'm tired..but if it looks pants in the morning i'll edit away hopefully i've explained it in the simplest way possible feel free to correct me :P
