ATI offers cost-effective and innovative ATSC solutions for TV manufacturers

MARKHAM, ON - ATI Technologies Inc. (TSX: ATY, NASDAQ: ATYT) today announced that it looks forward to working with TV manufacturers to develop integrated digital television (DTV) solutions, following a decision by the United States' Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to require the integration of off-air digital tuners in TV sets.

The FCC's phase-in plan would require that 50 per cent of all TVs larger than 36 inches integrate DTV tuners by July 2004 and that all TVs larger than 13 inches integrate DTV tuners by July 2007. The vast majority of TVs sold today are analog only and do not support the newer digital transmissions. According to Michael Powell, Chairman of the FCC: "this action will take these electronic appliances from being HDTV (High Definition TV) ready to HDTV reality."

We need some of that in the UK too!

The move to digital is pretty-well stalled, with ON/ITV Digital (the terrestrial system) in a monumental falling out with the FA - when a load of overpaid play-actors kicking a bal around didn't turn out to be the big draw they lumbered themselves with paying a fortune for.

DTTV in the UK is now (at the moment) based on a FTA/FTV/extra package, with decoders at £80-100.

Various cutoff dates need to be set, and Digital terrestrial is the only (if you're lucky) plug & go replacement for analogue.
It's not possible to get cable without subscription and installation, and while it IS possible to get Satellite without subscription - it's still a lot of fitting.

And what about portables?
If DTTV cannot be made to work on a portable + set top antenna that would be "acceptable" for analogue, then the case for closing down analogue is very poor indeed.
