Apple Says Some iPods Not Recognized by iTunes

"SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Computer Inc. is investigating a problem with some of its iPod digital music players that prevents them from being recognized by the latest version of iTunes, it said on Friday.

Cupertino, California-based Apple (Nasdaq:AAPL - news) on Wednesday upgraded iTunes, the company's digital jukebox software, with new features such as "iMix," which lets customers publish their playlists on the company's online music store, which other customers can then purchase.

"Apple is aware of a few isolated reports of iTunes 4.5 not recognizing the iPod and is looking into it," the company said in a statement. "If a customer has any technical issues they should contact Apple care."

Also on Wednesday the company released a software update for the popular iPod that is required to use the features on the new iTunes 4.5 release and on the online music store.

Apple has sold more than 3 million iPods since they were introduced in October 2001. Apple said on Wednesday that it had sold more than 70 million songs in the music store's first year, less than the 100 million the maker of Macintosh (news - web sites) computers and the iPod had targeted."
