nVidia chief goes ballistic over gimmick charge

"IN A DRAMATIC CONFERENCE CALL that Nvidia held last week, Nvidia's chieftain became incandescent with rage after a market researcher quizzed Jen Hsun Huang about Shader 2 and Shader 3.

The researcher asked Jen Hsun about the differences crucial to the Unreal 3 engine that will be finished late next year if we are lucky. The researcher described PS 3 as a gimmick but Jen Hsun lit up at this suggestion.

He told the researcher: "It's not a gimmick and it cost us 60 millions of transistors". He was quite upset and doesn't like the fact that people compare ATI cards that he called "3 years old architecture" with its PS3 part. Nvidia CPU said "all consumers want to have the next gen architecture, not a three year old one".

The same researcher raised Nvidia's chief to a fresh degree of incandescence after he asked why people would buy a PCI Express card with HSI versus the native ATI PCI Express R423 technology.

Jen Hsun replied that HSI, a bridge chip, is a full PCI Express component and consumer will see no difference whatever."

Definitely not a good sign. When a representative of a company responds to a question from an analyst in a harsh manner, that means something is amiss.

but it's when that "3 years old architecture" pawns you greatest attemps at a new then you should be looking pretty disapoited with your selfs.....he fail to mention the "3 years old architecture" is still better then nvidia's newer " but older based" one lol

To defend ATI: Why build a new architecture when the one you are using is working perfectly?

To comment on Nvidia: Why build a new architecture that does not compare to the "old architecture" of your competitor? Why not built a better architecture in the first place? Or at least improve it to the point it is better than your competitor.

Or, why create a new architecture when the existing one isn't even being fully taken advantage of.

It's sort of like DirectX, why make a new one every year when the new ones predecessor wasn't ever fully utilized.

Well we all know a 8?yrs old Riva TNT DX2 core is more mature,
then having an 3yrs old DX9 core...
