Dom is on a distinguished road

AGP will live for the next 12 to 18 months

"IN OUR PLEASANT chat with top ATI chip chap we learned that AGP cards will live on even after the recent PCI Express announcement.

X300, X600 and some other cores that are PCI-E only will get AGP chips and we understood that this solution should be native.

ATI believe that there is a space for AGP and PCI-E to coexist so they want to offer their customers right products.

Nvidia already solved this problem since Jen Hsun said that HSI works both way so as it can turn AGP card into PCI-E one it can turn PCI-E card to AGP.

Dave sees transition from AGP to PCI-E as something that wont happen overnight but generally sees benefits from new marchitecture as well. Its not backward compatible standard with existing AGP so you can not upgrade just the card, you have to get motherboard with PCI-E support as well.

With time there will be more PCI-E cards and less AGP's until this buss that served us for quite some times fades away completely.

Jen Hsun totally agrees with this coexisting theory and I guess that there is no any other possible way to do it.

All transitions are painful but at the end both Nvidia and ATI are chip companies so they sell chips not buses so it should not matter to much.

Intel wanted it so they didn’t had any other change then to go for it since Intel is the boss, as Intel says."

There can't be that many PCI express systems in people's hands yet, so it makes sense to release the latest cards in both formats, just as some low to midrange are avaialble in PCI for those who haven't upgraded yet.

What doesn't make sense, as some makers prove you CAN have both express and AGP on a motherboard, is the possibility that any powerful graphics cards bought for your current AGP system, could be rendered obsolete next time you upgrade the motherboard.

The answer, is AGP + Express motherbords, or perhaps dual cards ... why not?
Where a bridge chip is used, divide the card into 3 parts - the main card (top), and a plug-in bridge connector interface and native connector interface.

Or one connector on each edge (really only practical if the plate position is opposite for the two connectors)
