Europe launch for Apple's iTunes

Apple's pioneering online music service iTunes has launched in parts of Europe, offering songs for 79p.

It has proved enormously popular in the US, with more than 70 million songs downloaded by users in its first year.

The service will be in direct competition with Napster in the UK and OD2's European services. Most albums will cost £7.99.

iTunes will offer more than 700,000 songs, which can be downloaded to PC, copied to CD and played on an iPod.
