NEC unveils new chipset for 16x DVD recorders

NEC unveiled a new chipset for 16x DVD±R recorders (also supports DVD±R/RW, DVD-RAM).

The chipset features µPD63635 ATAPI DSP and µPC3335 ASP that control laser and servo. Despite the high recording speed, µPD63635 and µPC3335 have energy consumption reduced by 10% (down 1W at 8x playback) due to clock generator deactivation when it's idle. Both chips have QFP packages that allow using them in notebooks.

According to the press release, the new chipset will be used in products from Pioneer and NEC. The chipset is already sampling, volume production is to be launched this month to reach 2 million units per month by the year-end.
