DH Review: ATI R423

Recently I reviewed ATIs newest mid level card the X600XT and while it struggled a little at the highest resolutions it walked away with a silver medal for its low power consumption, overall performance, value for money and high 2D and 3D image quality.

It is with alot of interest today I turn Driverheavens new test rig to the PCIe version of the gold award winning powerhouse that is the X800XT.

This specific card we are reviewing today, codenamed The R423 is the non platinium edition meaning it is clocked at 500mhz core and 500/1000mhz ram.

Interesting review, I was somewhat disappointed that even with systems like the test righ that the new PCIe really showed no reason to change platforms, which in my case is good because I can't afford new toys anyway

Nice review bud. Definitely seems best to stick with AGP this round, in a year things will be different though

i got a question.... When comparing the AGP to PCI in that last part in the conclusion..... why is the AGP version running 1600x1200 and the PCI-EX running 1280x1024?... (bit confused i am)..... As for the review.... the results look promissing... most of all the things right now that could be slowing it down is hardware..... it's not taking full advantage of various things... (even if there isn't hardware that can take on the PCI-EX... but bonuses with it should be somewhat seen... then again.... to many factors)

Excellent reviews on the PCIe cards It will be nice to see what the next round brings with it. I want to see how socket 939 and PCIe will make a difference......if any.....on the gaming benchmarks.

i had this issue one time kovar.... try and uninstall macromedia flash AND shockwave players.. (windows/Downloaded Program Files) .... make sure they aren't working.... (go to a site that has it flash.. and don't allow it to install..)..... then restart the computer.... next... go to macromedia.com and make sure you grab both of the latest... reboot after.... this should cure it up...

There were some initial tests run at 4x to see if there were any differences compared to PCI-express and 8x...noting noteworthy was found.

Remember the move from PCI to AGP, AGP in it's early day's wasn't much faster than PCI,
nowadays no gamer would use a PCI graphic Card

If PCI-E is the "savior" remains open for now, imho.

Good Review Z. honest & clear, as usual

Sounds great!! Just curious......for classic benchmark's sake Could you show us the best you can get on 3DMark2001se? I know that DH doesn't use it for reviews......but I am sure that the guys on the Fastest Rig Comp would love to see it Or at least I would.

I put some insane volts through the 3.4 on AGP ran at over 4,050mhz and hit 29,350k but its not 24/7 speeds..... I can run at 3.9ghz at 1.7 volts.
