Sorry but this too also has the 242day timebomb. The 242 day time bomb is actually just when WU v5 comes online and XP starts looking for v5 around that date. As far as anything being different I have not noticed anything yet.

Do you have WMP9 installed also?
If you do than that is why the testing purposes is still on there.

get 200kb

i used getright and realized that if i get more than 1 segment at a time, i get a "not allowed..." error from the server and getright disconnects the whole download.

when you download with 1 segment then you will get about 4k for a few seconds and then the speed goes up.

so on the real tip, should we be overly concerned with this release if we've got 1106? we've been running with the betas and gone through so many emotions; can we live without this hassle. can't even download the thing because of the password thing. what gives?

MS put it on lock down. I would not be concerned because nothing is different exept where you downloaded it from. Both are from MS but if you are one of those that has to have it from MS then by all means download it. I got both and have not seen a difference yet. I might have to eat my words on this since this has just been released early this morning (by my time zone).

Just my 2 cents
Oh btw there are other links available on this forum.

password thing? download it with 1 segment (not more or it disconnects you) and i get 200KBs.
concerned about the 280day(or something about 280xyz day lol) limit?
good, so you see that we don't have to wait for the next sp for another year

In the past when I had issues with XP after loading a beta XPSP1, I would reinstall XP from my bootable CD (Corp). It would wipe the service pack from the system and load XP as if it was a clean install. This kept my applcations on my system intact.

I currently have SP1 v1105 on my system, can I load the WinXP Corp CD and do an install as a repair as I described above, and then install the final version of XPSP1?

Can someone explain why this will or will not work. Why must it be that you have to format the HD then do a fresh install. It doesn't make sense since everyone has been installing betas over betas for the past couple of weeks. Why the shouldn't the system accept the final over a beta.

Thanks,

thisisnuts

I think when you install final build over a beta you don't delete the 180 day timebomb. Don't know if this true or not but if you do the eula still says 180 days. The final build was designed to be installed over XP with no beta service pack installed and it could lead to problems down the road. You don't have to reformat if you don't want. It is just a lot of people prefer to after messing around with the betas. You can just boot to cd and choose repair and that should be sufficient.

Hey thank you! I extracted both "builds", started to analyze them both and could not find anything different but I only got half way done before giving up. Well not even half way. I think some people just don't believe or they are skeptical about getting it somewhere different then MS. I don't think a hoax or something that was tainted with a virus would get very far at this site. The MODS and people who make up the website would not tolerate it. That is why this site kicks ass. That and the fact I don't see alot of flaming going on either!

Yes people what are you all talking about? This link works just fine for me.

I right clicked on it, clicked save as and hit okay and its downloading at 8 kb a sec.

PLZ dont download this if you got 1106 already, I tested them both by a program that compiles and compares the 2 files and they are the same. Nothing diffrent, file size, dates, types all everything is same, so why wast time downloading and holding up others.

This link works fine, the weird bit is getright reports a 404 error 'forbidden', but as long as you don't close the forbidden dialogue the download continues to function normally. weird, but fun. Anyhoo, I don't need it anymore as I cancelled the download, I got it a couple of days ago, slipstreamed, reinstalled and am ready to play. Now what I need is the latest WinPE CD, so I can make my own customised XP DVD with all my favorite appz and drivers preinstalled. Now that will be cool...

Always nice to know we got peeps looking into these leaks though. Or we wouldn't have a clue what was going on with any updates. Not to mention we know months ahead of consumers, about whats going to happen when the updates are made public

Thanks sint@x.

Follow-up: if I install XP CORP as a repair to get rid of the v1105 that I currently have on my system, and install XPSP1 (Final), will I get a message on the lower right hand of my screen. Like so many have experienced with loading XP betas.

I just can't afford to format my HD, it took for ever to load all the programs I have on my system. Just don't want to go through the maddness again.

Thanks

Courtesy of Winbeta.

Just sent from our good friends at MS via email to the OEM's, nice instructions on removing the desktop build # on SP1 if it happens to show up. Good stuff.

It reads:
If you installed some of the interim "update" builds of Windows XP SP1, your desktop may show "For Testing Purposes Only" after installing final SP1 update. You can safely remove this by removing the Microsoft Test Root Certificate.

To do this, use start/run/certmgr.msc and look in the "Trusted Root Certificates" section, in the list of certificates, for icrosoft Test Root. Then simply delete it (right click/delete or use the X button on the toolbar).

The Test Root certificate was installed by a small command script when you installed various interim builds, because that's just the way they work. Whenever a test root cert is installed, "For Testing Purposes" shows - overriding everything else. If no Test Root Cert, then if there's a time limit, Eval Version shows. PaintDesktopVersion regkey only shows the build, not the extra strings.
