Sierra Gets Shutdown

More depressing news for the industry, Vivendi Universal Games has cut 350 staff and shut down Seattle-based Sierra. The venerable games company created some of the most popular action and adventure games in the 80's. The Sierra brand will live on in name only and projects tied to the Sierra pipeline, Half-Life 2, Ground Control II and Tribes: Vengeance are already being developed by other teams within Vivendi. Also affected by the restructuring, the Hoyle brand of card and board games have been canceled.

"Restructuring the organization and reducing our cost base are necessary to improve our operating effectiveness and profitability," said VU Games CEO Bruce Hack, in as terse a manner as possible. "This constitutes another important step in our turnaround plan aimed to better position the company for growth."

Along with VU Games restructuring, the game company is prepping up for profitability with a powerful lineup for the second half of 2004. VU Games is looking for some higher revenues with titles like World of Warcraft, Spyro: A Hero's Tail and the well-received The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay.

So what does this mean to us? Does this affect Half Life 2 and other games such as Counter Strike??? are they relate to Valve?

Doesn't effect HL2 at all.. Well...I dunno.. Maybe Valve will find some reason to delay the game even further since Sierra got shutdown LOL

Sierra made games. They made a lot of games back in the Win95 and Win 3.11 days. I liked the simulation game: Outpost and Outpost 2. They were neat.

I like the blue monster that would shout sierra at the beginning of every game, had a lot of fun with their games.

Noooo!!!! Say it isn't so. and police quest too.. I loved playing those games... does this make them more valuable? I remember playing KQ3 and walking around and kicking the cat till i got punished by the wizard.

lol.... the wizard... man... the kings quests were fun.. i remember playing kings quest 5 and beating it within 45 minutes

As with so many old game companies they bring back good memories from the past, but more to the contrary in recent years. I weep not. Now if only EA Games could go down too and I'd break out the champagne.

Well, I don't want to them to go down. Just want them to pull their heads out nVidias behind and see that there ARE ATi users out there
