Web site virus attack blunted

"Web surfers are no longer playing Russian roulette each time they visit a Web site, security researchers say, now that a far-reaching Internet attack has been disarmed.

The attack, which had turned some Web sites into points of digital infection, was nipped in the bud Friday, when Internet engineers managed to shut down a Russian server that had been the source of malicious code. I wonder if I saw something of that yesterday. I was surfing along when a site somehow managed to slip me a virus straight through Internet Explorer, targeting standard files like wmplayer.exe and notepad.exe while also hanging up the browser. Probably taking full charge of the process to ensure it being able to do its thing. Having AntiVir running in the background stopping it all I was not really hurt, so I went back a couple of times with different things turned off to see wich method it used. It proved to be using ActiveX in one way or another, wich wasn't too surprising.
