Stolen a FIlm? MPAA Wants To Know.

One in four people online has illegally downloaded a feature film--and it's cutting into box-office and DVD sales, the Motion Picture Association of America said in a study released Thursday.

A survey of 3,600 Internet users in eight countries showed that as many as 50 percent had downloaded copyrighted content in the last year. Of those people who have downloaded films, 17 percent said they are going to the movies less often, and 26 percent said they bought fewer DVDs, according to online researcher OTX, which conducted the study in partnership with the MPAA.

Bought less movies? Sheesh, I haven't boughten less than 20-30 DVD's a year since I discovered Hastings and their used CD aisle. I am more than willing to buy a DVD for $10, no problem. As for people not going to the movies as often? Well...some movies that don't suck might remedy that.

digerati will become famous soon enough

Seriously, they're making the dough. Good movies get bought on DVD, others get rented. I'm a big fan of renting. If it's truly worth buying then I buy it. What the hell is wrong with that?

They don't make the profit on the rental just the sale of the film to be rented to the rental company.

The companies that rent movies out make the money from the rental but they pay a fee to be able to rent out the movies for cash that is included in their price of the films purchase. Ever wonder why you have to pay so much for a late movie? Bingo.
