Maxtor, a leading hard drive manufacturer known best for its DiamondMax line, recently began shipping HDDs with a record-setting 80GB of storage per platter. Maxtor plans to release 60, 80, 120, and 160GB drives under the DiamondMax 16 name. It is unclear, though, how Maxtor plans to make 60GB and 120GB drives using 80GB platters. Also slated for release is a version of Maxtor's 7200RPM DiamondMax Plus 9 with an 8MB buffer. A larger cache, coupled with the areformentioned increase in areal density, should give the highly acclaimed Caviar "Special Edition" (by Western Digital) a run for its money. Parallel ATA versions of said drives are available now, with serial ATA versions expected to ship by the end of this year.
On a sad note, however, Maxtor has decided (effective October 1, 2002) to reduce their warranty on desktop HDDs to one year.
