The world's largest software maker will pay US$20 million to Lindows to settle a legal battle that threatened Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT - news) exclusive use of the "Windows" name. Lindows has agreed to change its name to Linspire by September 14th.
Microsoft will continue as the sole user of the "Windows" moniker for its market-dominating operating systems. "This case was centered on the fundamentals of international trademark law and our necessary efforts to protect the Windows trademark against infringement," said Tom Burt, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel for Microsoft.
