Advanced Micro Devices has pushed out the release of its highly anticipated Hammer chip for desktops by almost a quarter, and plans to delay the release of another Athlon chip.
The desktop version of Hammer, which is code-named Clawhammer and will be marketed under the Athlon brand name, will ship to PC manufacturers in the first quarter of 2003 and will hit store shelves toward the end of that quarter or at the beginning of the next, said John Crank, senior branding associate at AMD. Earlier, AMD planned to ship Clawhammer to manufacturers by the end of the fourth quarter of this year and have it on store shelves in the first quarter of 2003. Opteron, a version of Hammer for servers, will keep to its scheduled release in the first half of next year. Seems like AMD is discovering the same problems Intel faced with thier 64-bit chip. The hardware support isn't there, and the chip won't be such a 'huge success' like they are expecting. And far beit from AMD to release a chip that doesn't 'blow all Intel processors away and prove that AMD is so much better than Intel'. I find it funny that AMD is pushing for 64-bit technology in desktop machines, and they still haven't solved the heat problem with thier own 32-bit CPU's.
AMD will hit a wall if they can't lower the heat their CPU's currently make. If Intel pushed thier chips beyond the stability point, I'm willing to bet you could see 4 and maybe 5Ghz chips that litterally would smoke AMD. But I don't think Intel is going to make that dumb of a decision. Intel thrives on consumers who want stability, not something cheap. |
