14-Way PSU roundup - over 5000W put to the test

Nowadays computers draw more and more power. Especially when there is an Intel Pres(c)(h)ott CPU or nVidia's 6800 series videocard inside, to mention a few...

And if you want to spice things up by overclocking, the power usage will grow exponentially... Thus a decent power supply is needed.

For the last two months I've been collecting and testing power supplies. Thanks to the help of many shops and producers, I was able to test 14 PSU's. Including some flashy modded samples, some high power beasts, and even some fanless, passive cooled PSU's.

First of all I want to apologize for the long time it took to finish all the tests, my setup broke down twice. Not due to PSU failures, rather, events better be best described as “end-user errors”; dropping a screw on a running A64 motherboard wasn't advisable, trying to remove it with metal pliers even less.

uh... were do people get the idea that if you run a 400 watt PSU it = exactly that amount at the meter?

Talk about a crappy review, I'm sorry but there is no chance in hell that a 300 watt psu would be able to handle that kind of setup that was used for testing.

excuse me? I saw the 300W power supplies run that test rig without problem, you'll have a hard time pushing 300W using only motherboard/cpu/vidcard and 1 hard drive

even when hooking up 5x HDD and multi CDrom drives it will be hard to reach 250-300W.. the latest CoolerMaster PSU comes with nifty W meter, I don't know (yet) how accurate it is, but it does give a good idea: http://www.madshrimps.be/gotoartik.php?articID=207

so just because you have other experiences (apparantly?) with 300W PSU, this review is "crappy"
Judas seems to pull an ever more demanding system with a mere 350W.. crazy isn't it?

First of all checkout my setup and yea I am running mine also on 350watt so I dont completly dispute that you cant run it on 300watt but even with my setup my rails are
+12-11.90
-12- 11.90
+5- 4.70
-5- 4.70
+3.3 -3.33
and that is when the system is full load, if you check the review did you see the rails on the 300 watt psu with the system full load!
some top of the line 400-500watt psu dont have that good of rails on full load, and second thing check out the numbers I have never seen anybody test 14 PSU's and get rails on all of them that close espacially since the wattage varied, something in the way he tested wasnt right. And just beacuse a 300watt PSU can run a system like that does not mean it will run it reliably. And there is no reason for direct insults, I just had opinon on the way he tested . I can call a review crappy but that doesnt mean I think the same of the person. Even the best of us can be capable of crappy work at one time or another. And jmke I meant no disrespect so sorry if it came out that way, I just think the numbers just dont look right.

Too bad there weren't more psu's from certain large companies, like Antec, Enermax, and Sirtec.
