ONCE AGAIN THE RUMOUR MILL is going wild with fanciful stories of AMD product shortages. This time, the rumours are not far off, there are huge AMD shortages, but no one has managed to nail down the reasons why. The problem is not production at all, AMD can make the little chunks of silicon until they get bored.
OK, I am lying, some lines like the FX, and a couple of Opteron models are truly in short supply, but for the rest it's an artifical situation. The problem, it seems, is in AMD's inventory control software. About three weeks ago, AMD switched to a new system, and slight problems occurred. Those slight problems prevented AMD from shipping anything for almost two weeks. D'oh! A week and a half ago, things started trickling back out again, and I would think they are in full swing again by now, even if AMD had to hire donkeys to get them out the door.
