"The second phase of the Half-Life 2 preload begins to Steam account holders today.

This will allow users to download the majority of the audio of Half-Life 2 in encrypted form. No purchase is required to pre-load Half-Life 2, but is required to activate the game. The moment the game is made available, those who have pre-loaded and purchased Half-Life 2 via Steam will be ready to start playing right away."

Just MP or SP too? When can you "purchase via STEAM"

How about playing HL2 without installing crappy STEAM on my PC? Is that possible legally?

I am curious about those of us who already have a HL2 CDKey due to buying an ATI video card in the last 6-9 months.....after it's preloaded, will it recognize our key? I entered it in as a "Product Key" for a product I own in the area provided, and this allowed me to download CS:Source....so I hope so.....but does anyone know?

ati cdkey working.. dont worry about it.. its just phase 2 of the preload.. (audio) the game is not out yet!
about CS:S you should get bada_aztec2 its awesome!

I *know* HL2 isn't playable or ready to use yet.....but with the news of the pre-loading, it obviously brings up questions....and that's what I thought I would pose in case someone knew for sure or had read somewhere. (And as an FYI, I am currently at work and our proxy blocks the "Steam" website as gaming related, so I cannot go there or to the forums to research it)....

As for CS:S, there are "custom maps" already being generated? I thought there were only four CS:S maps to play on?!?! Or have people already begun converting maps or making their own for the CS:S (HL2) engine?

you do relise once you have the games you can play single player on you pc with out even an internet connection but you still need steam

If you buy HL2 you can play SP without steam, but if you want to play MP; it has to through steam, just like CS:CZ.

Neon just said you need steam even for SP.. I have no idea if it's true or not, but that's what he sad anyway..

Well i find that real hard to belive if you buy the game through a local dealer and get the cd's or dvd.

But ok maybe you can install steam and the halflife 2 from the cd's or dvd, and no internet connection would be required, then i guess it want be such a bad thing.

mabe not steam it self but what i'm seeing menu wise... the in game menu's make it look like steam menu's I have a funny fealing it's going to have steam built in....

What i meant was even if you have to use steam it can be played offline once the game is on your drive...

it loads pretty fast.... no need for c's actually i kinda like it ... no cd's to deal with...and it keeps it self up to date....!

the cd store version may not need steam to play but, for multi player it will so i don't know if it will be forced on you or not...

I don't have a problem with Steam myself... i don't particulary like it either.... I prefer how counterstrike used to be or other games... where you can actually browse the servers within the game iteself.
