Microsoft wins 'Tabbed Browsing' patent

Microsoft has been granted a patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on a process known as tabbing through a Web page in order to find links. Although the patent award has raised the ire of some in the open source browser community, the implications for the widely used technique are unclear.

The patent (number 6,785,865) is officially titled "Discoverability and navigation of hyperlinks via tabs."

Microsoft filed for the patent in March of 1997. It covers the process of shifting between links on a Web page using the computer's tab button.

Damn MS. Guess they finally figured out Mozilla is slowly kicking their butts.

Filed in March 1997! I take it there's a backlog of Patents. Bill must try and patent everything

I'm a software engineer and used to be employed by Siemens. Each year, one of my assigned goals was to patent something involving software engineering or in the type of software we were developing at the time. It sucked. I hated that. People would come up with some lame process and submit it for patent and the company would give em $1000. It was rediculous. IMO, it was like trying to get a patent on a thought since many of the submitted patents were not tangible per se. It's just job security for the lawyers.

I have an idea for a patent that is a "computer related device"-

I first thought of it about 5 years ago, and the technology has not caught up yet, and no one has "invented" it yet. How much would it cost me to file for a patent? (rough estimate) if you know, thanks.

I swear to god if I could get this device or idea patented, I and whoever helped me patent it would be millionaires before we die. -it might take a couple years for the technology to catch up, but we are getting very close... I hope someone didn't already patent it.

BWX - if you get a basic/preview design out, send it in to the patent office - you will get a pending ID number, so no-one can file for it after you do

The us patent system is a joke. Its under funded and understaffed, and the staff do not have to understand the subject area of a patent. While they are supposed to find prior art they do not have the time or expertise. It is easier for them to just pass a patent and let the courts decide. Hence the one with the most money wins.
