ATI Technologies yesterday introduced its new Theater 550 Pro video processor to Taiwan motherboard manufacturers and graphics-cards makers, and stated the chip will be able to deliver superb TV reception and personal video recording (PVR) functionality to PCs.
The Theater 550 Pro, which integrates a flexible worldwide-use frond-end analog 12-bit video decoder with an audio/video MPEG encoder and supports PCIe and PCI, is a discrete multimedia chip and has to be paired with an additional graphics chip, according to sources at the ATI Taiwan branch office. ATI is currently sampling and ramping the chip, and volume deliveries are scheduled to begin in October, the sources noted. ATI has not yet fixed the pricing for the Theater 550 Pro, but Taiwan motherboard makers expect the chip will be available at a competitive level, and a number of mobo makers and notebook OEMs and ODMs plan to introduce products featuring the Theater 550 Pro.
