Report: U.S. to Crack Down on Pirated Material

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. officials are expected to announce on Monday a coordinated crackdown on the theft of U.S. intellectual property such as pirated compact discs and knockoff auto parts, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday,

According to officials cited by the Journal, the targeted items amount to 7 percent of global trade. The new initiative will be called Strategy Targeting Organized Piracy, or Stop, for short. It will be comprised of a number of legal and administrative changes to be made in coming months.

The newspaper said that rampant piracy of copyrighted or patented U.S. goods -- particularly in China -- is depriving American companies of billions of dollars in revenue.

"This will be the most comprehensive effort ever launched to stop the trade in pirated goods," one senior administration official told the Journal, who provided details on the initiative. The official added that while "China is not the only problem, it is ground zero."

Attorney General John Ashcroft, Commerce Secretary Don Evans and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Zoellick plan to lay out details of the initiative, along with senior officials from the Department of Homeland Security, the Journal said.

I used to think gettin it for free was worth the effort, but I can see it has a global effect like the kids that download MP3's for hours. Honest folks have to find it at the store. But in that respect, we are all hippocrates really, I mean if it is free, why not right? But then, with the level of technology used to sniff out bad guys, it would seem to be just as easy to find the ones providing illegal software or selling it online. I know that anything digitally created and burned can be stolen, corrupted or found, but it just makes sense to get it the legit way. I watched a whole bunch of kids collect illegally burned copies of Doom 3, and play them at a local business that specializes in online gaming. The owner allowed that to happen because he wanted the kids to come back and use his place to do some community gaming. Illegal? I think so, and I forbid my son to go there, subsequently he bought his own CD of Doom 3, and plays it on his own machine, and online as well. Pirated goods benefits only a chosen few high up on the food chain, anything else is purely small time and they will never really profit from it.

Yeah, that kind of stuff don't fly with me....it's just naked thievery.

Someone downloading a copy of PS, etc etc to play with/try out for themselves I really do put in an entirely different catagory....but I'm kind of weird that way.

I see nothing wrong with piracy as long as you are not doing it for finacial gain. Especially where music is concerned, artists see less than a dollar per album sale, it's the producers who lose out. Speaking from personally experience, 90% of software that is downloaded is used once and never again.
