Steven P. Jobs, co-founder of Apple Computer and the computer industry's premier impresario, usually announces new products in front of thousands of cheering Macintosh aficionados.

Last Thursday, however, he unveiled the first of Apple's new line of mini retail stores in Palo Alto, Calif., with an understated flourish in front of a small gathering of reporters, cameramen and Apple Computer employees.

In part, the more important unveiling was Jobs himself, who was making his first public appearance since undergoing cancer surgery in July.

In his trademark running shoes, jeans and graying beard, he brushed off a reporter's question about his health, saying succinctly: "I'm back." And he was true to form in a question-and-answer session, chastising the retail industry for not investing heavily enough in new concepts.
