LG Electronics (LGE) recently introduced a 42-inch digital cable-ready (DCR)-PDP (plasma display panel) TV for the US market, according to a company press release.
Without the need to use an STB (set-top box), the TV allows access to digital broadcast content by adding a cable-TV card and connecting to a cable-TV line. The company claims the TV is the world’s first TV offering the electronic program guide (EPG) service and expects to sell the model at Best Buy. The US-based Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has ruled that all TVs over 36 inches should include digital tuners and cable-TV cards after next July. As a result, half of the over-36-inch digital TVs (DTVs) manufactured and sold in the US prior to this July have a DCR function, the company said. An EPG service allows users to scan available channel offerings and tune to current programs by using their remote control to point to specific program listings. Through the service, users can immediately acquire information about a certain program and even record the program in advance. _______________ Source: DigiTimes
