Default Post IDC: Linux users are loyal, not so for Novell

Linux users are the most loyal among operating system (OS) users, according to a recent research report by the International Data Corporation (IDC) released at the IDP Asia/Pacific IT Infrastructure Vision Conference 2004 in Taipei yesterday.

Vice president of the IDC Asia/Pacific computing systems research team, Avneesh Saxena, said that in general users tend not to shift from one OS to another. However, figures indicated that Netware users were only 58% loyal.

In response to this research, Novell pointed out it suffered from a declining market share from 1994 to 2002. Customers mainly from the mid- to small-size enterprises shifted to relatively cheaper OSs, such as NT Server from Microsoft, according to Novell Taiwan general manager, Barry Chen.

Novell will be rolling out its OES (Open Enterprise Server), which will support both SUSE Linux and Netware, by year-end and into early 2005, Chen added.
