"ANOTHER LARGE TFT-LCD manufacturer warned that profits were waning while continuing price drops are bringing the sale price of the panels close to cost.
The Taipei Times quoted the chairman of Taiwanese panel firm Chunghwa as saying that "irrational" price cuts were eating into its margins. However, Chunghwa still has considerable sales of cathode ray tube (CRT) monitors which will buffer the firm.
What's adding to the mood of despondency in the LCD panel business is that many of the firms are moving rapidly to future manufacturing designs, which will increase overcapacity.
Prices of LCD panels started to fall at the beginning of this year and have continued unabated, despite hopes that the Olympic Games would spur sales of TV units."
