British NHS Strikes Deal with Microsoft
The British NHS has struck a money-saving deal with computer giant Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Latest News about Microsoft amid reports of spiraling costs to its national information technology program.
The UK Department of Health said its "landmark agreement" with Microsoft to renew the license for desktop products would save an estimated 330 million pounds (US$625 million) on the current deal. It was also announced that Microsoft would be investing 40 million pounds (US$74 million) to develop health-specific software applications to improve patient care and safety across the NHS. Last month there were reports that the National Program for IT being implemented by the NHS could cost more than 30 billion pounds (US$55 billion) -- five times the amount originally announced by the government. Individual Electronic Records The procurement price agreed by the government was 6 billion pounds (US$11 billion) but it is now estimated total implementation costs will be between 18.6 billion pounds (US$34 billion) and 31 billion pounds (US$57 billion), according to Computer Weekly magazine. The system will eventually lead to all patients having an individual electronic record, while online booking will mean doctors and patients can make hospital appointments at their convenience. The Department of Health said at the time that it was generally accepted in the IT industry that implementation costs were some three to five times the cost of procurements. Last month, the National Audit Office also announced it was to scrutinize the NHS's new computer system to assess the financial viability of the scheme. More Licenses Earlier this year Health Secretary John Reid and NHS IT Director General Richard Granger met Microsoft's Bill Gates to discuss the company's involvement with the NHS. The new arrangement will allow the NHS to use up to 900,000 licenses compared to the current 500,000, at no extra cost. __________ Source: E-Commerce Times |
