The RAM module market is growing larger and more complex with each passing minute. Some years ago there was almost no difference between the RAM modules from different manufactures. Today however, the market is filled with many different RAM modules designed for different purposes. Value oriented modules for enthusiasts with a tight budget, low latency modules for systems that run close to stock clock speeds, high speed modules for overclockers aiming for massive bandwidth scores and many more. There are many modules to choose from for every purpose; however are there any modules versatile enough to cover as many market aspects as possible? The Crucial Ballistix series are rumored to be as such and Crucial honored me by sending me two of their Ballistix PC4000 512MB modules for a review.
A few words about Crucial first. Crucial is a division of Micron Technology INC, a DRAM manufacturer. Micron launched Crucial during 1996 in order to offer their products directly to the user at competitive prices. The years that followed Crucial grew, launching Crucial Europe (1999) and offering their customers more products than DRAM modules such as graphic cards, flash cards and USB flash drives. The strongest advantages of Crucial Technology are that they offer guaranteed compatibility with superior modules and direct support from the manufacturer.
