Movie Pirates Sued by Hollywood Studios

Following the lead of the record industry, seven major Hollywood studios have filed lawsuits against movie downloaders in several US states. The Motion Picture Association of America is representing the studios in the suits.

The suits, filed in Denver, NYC, San Francisco and St. Louis, are the first by the movie industry against movie pirates. The MPAA declined to say how many suits had been filed and where. The one in St. Louis is filed against “John Doe” defendants.

The “John Does” are being sued for federal copyright infringement, which carries fines of US$30,000 per film, and US$150,000 if the action by the movie pirate in question is proven to be willful.
