Default Post Dell confirms thermal issues with OptiPlex GX280 SMT chassis

In response to a November 11 report stating several Dell desktop models introduced in the third quarter may have heat pipe thermal module issues, Dell stated that the issue was isolated to a specific version of the company’s OptiPlex GX280 SMT chassis.

According to Dell, the issue affected systems shipped from July to mid-September 2004, but only a small number of systems were affected. Sources in Taiwan say 100,000 systems were affected.

Dell was able to quickly identify the issue and implement quality improvement measures rapidly, the company pointed out.

Dell sent a “tiger team” to Taiwan to help work out a solution for the problem, the sources stated. According to Dell, customers look to Dell for a single point of accountability, and the tiger team is one of a range of company initiatives through which Dell works closely with its partners to ensure that high product and quality standards are maintained.

Dell has dispatched tiger teams in the past to handle various issues.
