Scientists in Japan say they have successfully built an electronic eye that could help blind people move about relatively safely.

According to Institute of Physics' MST journal the electronic eye, which is placed above the wearers glasses, contains a smart camera-computer combo which will aid the blind to cross busy roads etc passing information through a voice speech system.

The device can detect the presence of a pedestrian crossing, tell the wearer the distance to the other side of the road and when the lights change from red to green.
