British Bank Stops Online Service After Phishing Scam

NatWest, one of Britain’s largest financial institutions has taken part of its Internet service offline following thousands of its customers falling victim to a phishing scam. One million NatWest customers were affected by the move.

NatWest made it impossible for its customers to set up new direct debits or to pay standing orders over the Internet. The move showcases the rapidly increasing phishing attacks, which encourage users to give out personal information.

Last week, banks were criticised for not doing more to prevent their customers falling victim to Internet fraud. NatWest said yesterday that “Nobody has lost any money as a result of our pre-emptive measures.”
