A coalition of religious and family groups criticized video game makers Tuesday for creating products that allegedly glorify murder and hate crimes--and slammed retailers for selling such games to minors.

A group led by the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility, an investor advocacy group, released its list of the 10 most violent games as a warning to parents about to set out on holiday shopping expeditions.

"Unwary parents and grandparents need to know there are certain violent games that should be off-limits to children," said Sister Pat Wolf, executive director of ICCR, singling out games such as "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" that reward players for killing and looting characters. "These are the kind of values a serial killer might embrace," she said.

Aside from "Grand Theft," the list includes recent best-sellers such as "Halo 2," "Doom 3" and "Half Life 2." The report also singled out "America's Army," a free game distributed by the U.S. Army as a recruiting tool. Wolf criticized it for being available to users regardless of age.

My girlfriend came home yesterday saying, "oh- that game you're playing is the third most gory game ever made."

I said yeah, it really isn't that bad- at least it isn't Satanic like Doom3 is. Not for a 10 year old kid though, that's for sure. I'd say a 15 year old could handle it w/o too much mental damage.

Once again it is people trying to offload the responsibility on everyone else but themselves. Need to have the big bad game makers bend over and take it up the rear so the parents can continue dropping their kids off at daycare while they do what they want and can now totally abstain from raising them.

Doom 3 has no satanic stuff... I mean, a few references but so what? You don't LEARN anything! I find the gorriest game in the world to date must be the SOFs... The rest like HL2 or Doom 3 are for me SO NOT GORY... Seriously I'd rate them maybe a 5 or 6 on ten...

yeah, but it doesn't teach u anything. it makes some references so did PainKiller. Big Deal... Also Undying was about the occult. i played all three, does that make me a Devil Worshipper? People r so quick to point fingers to someone or something else to blame but won't accept their responsibilty... That's why there's a fricking label on the games so people can see what games r suitable for what age group of kids. I mean can't they read? Who's fault is it if their 10 or 12 yr bitches for Grand Theft Auto even though it's rated M and the parent buys it for him/her just for them to shut up? I don't think it's the Game Industry's fault...

Hey did anyone notice C|Net's example shot of one of the most violent video games? an HL2 striding across a cityscape ala War of the Worlds. That's just too damn violent, what the hell kind of games should my kid play, "Care Bears and the Only One True God 3d Extreme!". where you get to be a Care Bear and first try to convert, then bomb the living hell out of all the nasty bad evil muslims, homosexuals, and minorities? Really.....

I found seriously all the games mentioned not violent... A good violent game might be Manhunt in recent history and the GTAs but that's it...

I make the argument NONE of the games are "violent" as no one gets hurt in real life. They are disturbing to younger people because of the simulated violence which is why young kids shouldn't play them because they can't differentiate between real life and fantasy more often than not.

Yeah, I heard an interview while driving through the mountains of Virginia today with some guy from that ICCR organization and this guy was gushing him up about how they did such a good job letting us know those were just evil bad games and we should all play roller coaster tycoon and umm I think The Sims are the only suitable games to play, I was laughing my butt off for the 3 minutes we had a signal at the top of that mountain then of course it was gone for good.... hate mountains hate em...
