Half-Life 2 Update

"The changes in this release are directed at reducing the problem some users are experiencing with sound stuttering. The sound stuttering is not indicative of a sound problem, sound stuttering is only a symptom of texture thrashing on your video card or AGP memory. For information on how to reduce texture thrashing visit this link on our support site:
http://steampowered.custhelp.com/cgi...hp?p_faqid=280

This update will fix sound stuttering that users were experiencing that would last for longer than a few seconds during normal gameplay. This update will also eliminate this same behavior following a quicksave or autosave. There will still be a short pause while the autosave happens, but not the more drawn out stuttering behaivior.

We are still investigating another performance problem on some hardware, which will manifest where the game is getting into a state where performance drops to less than 5 fps and does not recover or crashes.

Next week we will be releasing the Source SDK, along with a surprise for the community."

Source: Steam Powered
Hmmm i wonder what the surprise can be

with any luck it will either be a real halflife 2 multiplayer, or a bunch of new maps and skins for CS:S.

Im thinking it will either be CS bots or new models/textures for HL:Source.

Valve stated that they will not add any models/textures for HL:Source. Look for modders to.

BTW, this patch did absolutely nothing for me. I have never been this depressed about a game ever. This game is such a masterpiece and the stutttering just annoys the hell outta me. We'll see what further patches come along.

Have you tried different heapsizes in an autoexec.cfg? I have 1G ram and 256 Megs works fine as a heapsize

Not with the patch. It's so odd because in general, the game is still hitting the hard drive all the time. It's as if there is barely any caching taking place at all.

heapsize did nothing for me. I can play the game okay, but it is not as smooth as I come to expect from modern fps. Doom3 and FarCry run like butter for me. I still think that Miles sound is part of the issue. Valve can say it's textures all they want but I am positive that I get stutters when all needed textures are loaded and certain sounds are played. It makes no sense to have the hard drive clicking away all the time. No other game does this.

HL2 update? All it did was update Steam.

And isn't the Source SDK already out?

Yeah wierd, but that's the case. My settings don't even show the game as updated, but it was because the new cvar is present.

The SDK being released is the whole full blown thing that Valve uses. The current one is stripped down.

For those wondering, the file that was updated was the "source engine.gcf".

Hmm, never had stuttering except from the autosaves here, so this doesn't really bother me. There's a bunch of settings in my autoexec.cfg and the -heapsize switch for the shortcut I use though so that COULD be a help. Ah well can't play it for 4 days anyways.....

We've been waiting days for a PATCH. How does lowering your graphics settings constitute a PATCH. Anybody that has this problem has already tried these adjustments with limited success. This problem destroys the whole atmosphere of the game. Guess I'll have to put it away until they figure it out.

What graphic settings? Mine are all still the same. The stuttering is better, but not gone by a long shot. They need to fix it.

This was posted yesterday at 2:55 pm on the Steam news page with reguards to the patch --

Question How can I make the sound stop skipping when playing Half-Life 2?

Answer Here are a few suggestions for fixing the sound skipping problem.

1. Download the latest drivers for your video card.
2. Turn down (or off) anti-aliasing completely. Many cards should be defaulting to no AA.
3. Drop your video resolution down one step.
4. Drop texture level down one setting. This will slightly degrade the visual quality of the textures in the game.

Shortly after it was posted I logged onto Steam and there was a download alright, but there were no changes to the way the game played. So, I ask where is the patch?
