Proposal to criminalise fast forwarding past adverts

The Intellectual Property Protection Act of 2004 contains a section that may make it a criminal offence to fast forward past advertisements in your own home either on a DVD, Tape or even home recorded media.

This part of the Act was proposed by the movie industry and has already passed through the House in a 'lame duck' session among the other items in the act which were aimed at helping consumers.

If passed it would mean that skipping adverts in DVDs and the many recorders like TiVo could be disabled with users unable to skip adverts by skipping or even fast forwarding through them.

dont mind watching the trailers on a DVD the first time but every time NO way

disney being the worst offenders with trailers for about 8 films on every DVD

& then they wonder why people have no qualms about copying!
i had to sit through at least 5mins of TV commercials when i went to see alexander yesterday. really pissed me off. now they want me to buy a dvd & sit through the commercials? that is going to be really fun when i watch the movie in 5 years & have to sit through a bunch of meaninless commercials & trailers. the trailer thing has already been going on with disney releases. it is why i will no longer purchase their movies. f..k the greedy bastards.

I was wondering why a lot of the newer dvd's that I have been getting have the feature disabled where you are able to skip right to the menu. I guess I am going to have to invest in a dvd burner and strip out the ads too. I do not want to pay $20 for a dvd and be force fed a load of crap every time I put the movie in.

I guess that this is the price we pay for allowing this sort of thing to take place. We should be writing these companies and demanding that they remove the commercials. We should also be writing our congressmen and women to let them know how we feel about bills such as this.

Thats fine, we'll just think of those 'advertisements' as SPAM and we'll rinse and repeat the entire cycle. Imagine how many years the courts would sit in deciding that.

... What do pay for when we buy DVD's the commercials? Or are they going to make Commercial-Free DVD's for $10-$30 more? Anyways it is still completely stupid. Not many people pay attention to those things. We get enough from people around us telling us about that cool movie they watched at such an such a time. Among other things. I think the free advertising from friends and family work better. Not this force fed junk.
