ATI cancels the release of the X700 XT

Announced last September, the X700 XT isn’t still available in shops and the reason is because it never will. ATI has simply cancelled this X700 version clocked at 475 MHz GPU and 525 MHz GDDR memory. Is the reason production issues? Wrong position compared to the competition? It is probably a bit of both. But ATI’s official announcement is that they want to have better product range coherence.

ATI won’t have an equivalent product compared to the GeForce 6600 GT 128 MB (recommended price $199). ATI’s closest products are the X700 Pro 128 MB, $179, and if it isn’t cancelled – the standard X800 ($249) which will be released in January. The X800 has been announced simultaneously to the X850.

With several products almost unobtainable, like the X800 XT PE, and the GeForce 6800 Ultra for NVIDIA, ATI shows with this product cancellation that the race between ATI and NVIDIA isn’t always beneficial for users. It is probably time for everyone, media included, to slow down a little bit …
