German authorities have announced that they have gathered thousands of usernames from illegal download web sites following a crackdown on the piracy of movies, software, games and music. The names were gathered in an investigation of just 4 men.

A spokesperson for the Thuringia state police said: "We don't know yet if we are talking about 8,000 or 20,000 people." If convicted, downloaders face large fines and in some cases, prison terms. The four men were arrested in Sept.

They ran a site that authorities believed generated a revenue of €1.3 million.
