Steam Client Update Released

A platform update is available and will be applied automatically when Steam is restarted. The changes include:

Steam
  • Source MODs will now automatically appear in the games list
  • Improved startup process for Steam
  • Fixed crash when creating a backup that would span multiple DVDs
  • Fixed a bug that would unnecessarily validate Steam caches after a cache corruption
  • Fixed Condition Zero: Deleted Scenes and Codename Gordon failing to backup correctly
  • Fixed a bug where the message “the game files will be deleted and re-acquired” would repeat
  • Fixed offline mode failing after not connecting to Steam for more than a month
Half-Life 2
  • Optimization to the Steam filesystem to reduce game launch and level transition time
Source SDK
  • Simplified debug-launch process for MOD developers. MOD developers no longer need to place a config file in their directory
  • Added a registry key for MOD developers to use to locate a user’s Steam installation located at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Steam\SourceModIn stallPath
Source: Steam Powered

They are fixing everything except all the lousy cheaters. We have put alot of cash up for these games and still no sign of getting rid of cheaters.

Hey buddy, the issue with sound glitches, graphic lockups between 1-15mins of play is not Steam related, neither is it Valve, ATI, Nvidia or VIA. We did think it was the AGP driver that was compiled with the 4in1 chipset drivers. But others are reporting that nvidia chipsets are also effected. The whole deal is very wierd.

I am testing a new solution tonight - we think it is SP2 related. One guy in Australia has discovered that downgrading to SP1 for XP fixed the issue. Note that the problem is XP related only.

We will be posting on Steam forums tonight for a fix and updating the forums. if you need more info read here

This is a more up to date report here The guy that is testing it with me is t-readyroc

I am lucky as my sound stutter is quite minor compared to others and the game is very playable with only the odd chunky section. Actually I thought the problem was with audigy sound cards (and miles sound) as others who have taken out their sound card and went on board solved their issues. Anyways thanks for the detailed reply. Valve is improving and I quite like the system.

Actually I have the intel 865 chipset...... So maybe my problem is different than most.

Newer versions of the 4-in-1's don't install the VIA AGP driver on WinXP SP2 installations. Maybe your problem is that the VIA AGP driver is *not* being installed and not that it *is*?

Well, last week I was playing hl2:dm with no problems. I reformatted today for the first time in a while. I finally finish reinstalling everything and load hl2:dm up and I've been getting freezes at the menu before I even get into the game. Happens with cs:s as well so I have no clue what is happening anymore with this game. HL2 (single player) seems absolutely fine though. I don't get it.

One thing that has worked for me so I don't have to reboot the whole computer is to test run the game in a window instead of full screen. It's definitely cut down on my reboots while testing.
