Samsung may pursue ‘Intel Inside’ success with new ‘Itzin’ brand for components

Samsung Electronics is planning to introduce a brand name called “Itzin” for its electronics components in the first half of 2005, according to sources. Sources indicated that customers are already aware of the plans and that a public announcement could be made in January.

Both Samsung in Taiwan and South Korea declined to comment on the news.

Samsung plans to market products including flash memory, LCD panels and LCD driver ICs under the new brand name starting by the end of the first half of 2005, sources said.

The new brand is intended to clearly differentiate its components from its “Samsung” branded end-user products, according to sources. It seems that Samsung will use the brand to help its customers sell their products in a similar way to Intel’s “Intel Inside” campaign.

In 2004, Intel was the fifth most valuable brand name, valued at US$33.5 billion, according to a top 100 top brand ranking published by BusinessWeek in August. The Samsung brand was ranked 21 and valued at US$12.6 billion. The valuations happen to be close to the annual revenues of both companies.

Speakers of several languages, including Korean, were unable to suggest an origin for “Itzin.” Based on how the brand may be said, “It’s in” would be a possibility that falls in line with some other major brand catch phrases.
