2004 saw cyber crime undergo a rapid growth period, with the number of new viruses spreading across the world increasing by 50%. Also, the number of known computer viruses broke the 100,000 barrier.

Phishing scams grew by30% per month in 2004, according to the Anti-Phishing Working group, and are becoming more and more sophisticated. Lycos Europe reported a 500% increase of phishing emails it had been able to stop in 2004.

The flip-side is that 2004 saw more virus writers, hackers and crackers arrested globally than any other year so far.
