Samsung Develops World's Largest Organic LED Panel
Samsung Electronics developed the world's first 21-inch organic light emitting diode (OLED) display panel for high-definition televisions.
The electronics manufacturer said Tuesday that its 21-inch active matrix (AM) OLED panel far outperforms existing liquid crystal displays (LCDs) in picture clarity, brightness and signal response time. Samsung Electronics said the next-generation flat panel screen features exceptionally high picture resolution of 6.22 million pixels and an outstanding contrast ratio of 5,000 to 1. The AM OLED also boasts unmatched brightness of 1,000 nit, more than twice as bright as existing LCD screens. The AM OLED's signal response time is also more than 1,000 times faster than existing LCD monitors. Furthermore, in contrast to LCD monitors that require a backlight unit, OLED screens emit their own light, eliminating the need for backlighting and allowing display makers to develop slimmer and more power-efficient monitors. _______________ Read More: Korea Times |

Now all they need to do is make them commercially available, kick the size up 100% and drop the cost.

what is the organic substance being used in these monitors? Being able to have the best quality picture available is awsome, but if you have to kill something to have it, there must be an ethical point where it can no longer be had.

Here is some more info on this from whatis.com. It looks like they are using some kind of organic polymer to do this. So it is organic only becuase it is carbon based. It is nothing that has to reproduce itself. Kodak is using this in some of thier cameras. They actually developed the technology. I cant wait for the flexible displays (FOLED) to come out. How cool will it be to carry your screen around in a tube. Technology makes my bottom tingle!!
