Logitech MX1000 Review

We take a close look at the Logitech MX1000 laser mouse. Is this the end of the optical mice era? Does the MX1000 perform as good as it looks? Why not meander in to find out? Are you tired of all the questions?

We will go over its features, technology, gaming performance, tests on different surfaces and bundled software. After all, haven't we had enough of those red glow of today's optical mice? Optical mice are so late 90's.

blown503 will become famous soon enough

I have one but sometimes it like locks up or looses its signal or something. It comes back after pushing the reset button on the bottom a few times.

End of the Optical Mouse era....

Well err a LASER mouse is an Optical mouse, it's just a different method of creating the light.

My GF just got a MX1000 a few days ago for her computer. The mouse rocks. Fits nice in the hand, really fast and just good to look at lol. I have the the old MX700, which is showing it's age. Where my palm rest, that area is worn out, and the click buttons are like that too. But hell it still works great.

Replaced my MX700 with an MX1000, a worthy upgrade i would say. Noticably smoother and the buttons are in much more sensible positions

I got one last month. Quality Mouse.
One little thing that has been winding me up was that every now and then the cursor would jump about an inch straight up the screen. I put this down to my aging game pad and plumped for an icemat to go with it. This is where the MX1000 really comes into its own. Absolutley superb.
Only the problem with the cursor is still there but doesn't happen as often. I think its down the the base unit being too close to my pc but I cant get it any further away because the length of the usb cable isnt that great. Really annoying when your lining up the perfect headshot.

you cant expect perfection. but for a mouse that cost as much as the mx1000 does, you do expect perfection!

Got one for Christmas, incredible mouse, using it with my new Icemat 2nd, that is an unbeatable combination.
Was able to use it steady for over a week before the power indicator dropped 1 bar.

Also the additional buttons become addictive, keep trying to hit them when using another mouse on another computer.

You can purchase a usb extention cord for very cheap... it should fix that issue!

Placement doesn't seem too important in my case, as I have had my base unit right by both a speaker and a monitor without noticing a difference. Cursor jumping issues with optical mice is usually related to the optics/surface too, so check carefully for some speck of dust on the 'camera'. A dampened cuetip might be good to clean that area I guess.

For a pad I now use a black thin plastic 3$ pad sold under the name "Opti Love" and it's working great. Could be a little bigger but then the MX-1000 is so precise and responsive that I need less surface than with previous mice.

Pick up lag is a real problem that will make every serious first person shooter fan regret having purchased this mouse.

Unless there is a variance between individual mice, I would guess that perhaps what quite a few gamers indicate as 'pickup lag' is to some extent an effect of the mouse ball not being there. With a balled mouse one can make large swipes and have the ball continue to rotate a bit while lifted, an effect that is naturally non existant on opticals. Even with an optical that has a longer range of the beam than the MX1000 it takes a while getting used to the optics engine after having used a ball mouse before.

This is the first optical for my own system, having been addicted to three-button mice and deterred by lesser batteries of previous opticals. So it did take some time to get really comfortable in shooter games and I know from experience that hardcore online gamers might not have the time or patience. In the past I've even seen clans taking a scheduled time off competitive play with the message "we're trying out new mice".

maybe this is the reason. I have used opticals for years now so am probably so used to them as to not notice the "lag" that others are finding.

good thinking mkk

Fraid not. I've had an MX700 for 2 years before my MX1000. The former does not have the aforementioned lag whatsoever.

can I just mention in case there has been some confusion, that I have no lag of any sort. What I was describing was the mouse suddenly jumping about 100pixels straight upwards. I've never experienced this with optical mice before and I've been using them since M$ brought the first optical mouse to the market.

i think we have been over this before, but remind me, why do you lift the mouse up when gaming? or by "pick up" do you mean inital movement..... I know if im gaming it stays on my icemat the whole time. Im not sure about "serious" gamers but i play quite a few myself and after trying about 40 mice in the last year the Mx1000 is the best ive used.

It's a method of spinning faster for some people dating back to mouseball gaming where you flick your wrist with the mouse in your hand really fast to the right and it makes you do a quick 180 degree turn and then you can put the mouse down in the middle pad/surface again. This is becoming less common, but still quite effective.

Some people don't have their sensitivity very high. To do a full 180 degree turn it requires the person to move from point A to point B on the desk left, pick up mouse and bring it back to point A and then move it to point B again.

You can really tell who does these and who doesn't in games when you notice a person taking about 2 seconds to do a simple 180 degree turn.

I picked one of these up Friday. W/ dipstick's help I was able to sort out the button issue. Over all very happy with my purchase, and mine is graphite black? I'm using the Icemat II /w it as well.

No Style is on the ball. For fast paced games (not your cheesy war strategy fps's) there's no way you can keep the mouse on the pad with all the movement you have to do to win in such a game. A mousepad and my arm are only so long, and to do 180's and then center in for the kill, I have to get the mouse back in my comfort or perfect aim zone, and to do that without turning around again, I pick up the mouse. And I get killed as a result of this mouse's lag when the action is intense and I dont have 500ms to spare.

Logitech is very much aware of this problem; you guys who dont detect it dont play your games at fast speeds is all.

Truely is i don'tlike mx1000. I use my 510 all the time and feel pretty cool about it. Cordles is cool, but i don't need it. As for gliding, i don't think it's glides better than mine with Steelpad4D. And battery charging... I don't like it.

Nothing wrong with battery charging in this thing. It seems to last a week before it needs charging. All you do is cradle it when you go to bed and thats it.

Looks like my mouse needs to be returned to Logitech. There are know problems with certain revisions of the mouse and base unit - which I have - and this is the problem with the cursor jumping. As for the other problems mentioned here, it doesn't look as if they are going to do anything about it so the hardcore FPS gamers may be dissapointed.
