Red Orchestra Interview

The Make Something Unreal mod contest for Unreal Tournament 2004 was without a doubt the biggest ever gaming mod contest ever made and Monday the Grand Finals winners were announced with the WWII multiplayer shooter Red Orchestra winning both a cash prize of $50,000 and a full Unreal engine licence worth an estimated $350,000. HomeLAN got a chance to chat with the lead producer and programmer John Gibson to get his reaction to the win and what this means for the future of Red Orchestra.

i played it on the first beta when it was released for UT2003, but dont have UT2004 so havent played it since. It was good fun then, but looks as if it has improved so much as to be almost a different game!!

am wondering if it worth getting UT2004 to play this mod ...

It's a positively huge 618MB mod. But it looks so interesting I'll put it on download and try it out later.

After some quick testing I get the feeling that it could be great fun for online play with many players on each team, or larger LAN's for that matter. But for smaller LAN's with friends and others who prefer a game that is easier to get into and just play, Call of Duty remains the shining star. Of course, those who have bought UT2004 and don't have Call of Duty can get almost a whole new game for free out of Red Orchestra. It really is an impressive mod.

I like the touches of realism in like how a tank driver has a very limited view slot, but unless you want a game to be a hardcore WW2 experience such things can also backfire on gameplay. Most players will prefer an easier setup of being able to drive and fire the main gun at the same time. As much as I like Call of Duty I would prefer something in the middle of the two, at least when it comes to the visibility aspect. I'd let a single player drive and shoot for the sake of gameplay enjoyment, but cramp the view somewhat to make it both feel more like you're in a tank and give infantry a better chance to sneak up with a panzerfaust shot or magnetic mine.
