DH Update: Hardware Reviews Index

We have been bringing some improvements to the site in the New Year and one area which badly needed an overhaul was the review index, it really was quite a mess and was poorly organised for everyone to find products they needed.

Thanks to some nifty coding from MD5 we have totally overhauled the hardware index, this is neatly split up into relevant sections, lists the last 10 hardware reviews we posted on the site and has a search function to save time. There is also a brief article description with each listing.

We also have added dates for every review since we opened so hopefully this will aid you all in finding the article you need.

Just curious, Z, did u get a chance to remove the intellitxt code from some of the old reviews?

Great job Phil!

as far as I know we didn't use intellitxt in the reviews, a few tags may have made they're way in, while setting up the base layout, if they took it from the front page, either way I don't think they'd be active.

If you find any, let me know, and I'll make sure they're removed.

well for the longest time, a bunch of the old reviews have been giving me problems to view them, Craig. when i try to open them, IE tries to dl intellitxt, as it says so in the Status Bar. Before the new layout, i could have told u the range of reviews that were giving me problems, but now i'll have to check each review individually. i do have 2 reviews though: Ultra X Connect 500w PSU and UV Kit dated 08/08/2004 and OCZ Powerstream 420W dated 29/05/04

All those reviews work fine here, and ive tested on 6 machines, three on different IPS, from opera to IE. I know they have outdated intellitxt code but its linking to nothing so it shouldnt affect anything. Can anyone else reproduce this? if its only affecting Drakon its a lot of work to edit hundreds of HTML pages, no one else has mentioned this.

Well it appears that my firewall is the reason why i can't view those reviews. For some reason it's causing a problem. I disabled it for a little while and checked a few of the reviews that were giving problems, and they worked. I got Norton Internet Security 2004. It's has the latest updates and all. Weird...

Very strange indeed. it must be blocking the scripting, it not intrusive or dangerous mind you. It would be better to remove the outdated code and its on the list, its just not a masive priority right now due to the amount of time it will take. I know there were some issues with IS2004 before and we reported several bugs ourselves in the past with various code, issues which werent there in V2003.

Wow, it is so much easier than before to find things.

The only "problem" if you want to call it that.. when I click on a picture in a review (in the A/L speaker review for example), it opens in the same window.

If I forget and exit out of the picture like I do in most reviews on the net it seems- instead of using the back button; I get kicked out of the review, the review index, and everything. I have to go all the way back to DH main page, then the review index, then the review, then the page to get back where I was etc...

Maybe it would be easier to have the pics open in a new window? I could right click/ open in new window every time I suppose....

In a word, it's great - very handy.

Suggestion though - would it be possible to have a drop down menu (or similar access tool) for each individual reviewed item for each subcategory. Should make navigation and selection of the desired review quicker, especially as your reviewed items grow in number.

Editor preference, I always set the target for links to _blank, but it's not always done, again it's not a major issue, but may go on the list, certainly something we can bare in mind in future reviews. But it'd be very time consuming to go back over 100+ reviews.

I'm not sure I understand what you're suggesting here. Could you give us more information, perhaps an example as well?

Well now you mention it.

In the past I rarely used blank (meaning the images opened in a new window) but in the last few months all reviews should have this for the pictures. It will be a standard thing from now on. Of course you have noticed this for a while, because you read all the reviews, right ?
