Source Engine vs Doom 3 Engine
To give you an idea of how weird it is to see people comparing a Valve engine to an id engine, consider that without id, Valve probably wouldn't be in existence. Gabe Newell left Microsoft and went into game development after he talked to the id development team and saw what they were doing. Even more ironic is that Half-Life used the Quake licensed engine from id. Now these are the top engines out there and something no other game will be able to top for a couple of years (Unreal Engine 3). Here's a comparison of each engine, not game, in each critical area of game development.

That is an interesting review.
Why is FarCry's engine not considered one of today's top game engine's? Are the other two really that much more advanced? I wonder how he can write one word about the sound without ever hearing HL2? Actually I can't understand why he has never heard HL2.. it seems like he would have by now.. Anyway, it is a good read-

it's a little harder comparing three engines as opposed to two
and it seems that neither game engine uses EAX - at least according to that review so there goes Creative's hold on the market for people buying machines just to play these games

That "review" started out really well on the graphical front, but as soon as it dived deeper it all became irrelevant. All I could think of is SOF2 and other Q3 based and how much they modded it to suit their needs. An engine is only as good as the developer using it. I truly think both engines are great and they can only truly be compared when more developers make games for it and exploit what each can truly do.
A prime example is with the Source Engine. Both Vampire and HL2 used the Source engine, but Valve obviously implemented the engine to a greater effect than the folks over at Troika Games. Licensing and support from the parent company is also a key factor when considering engines.

Nice doom III fluff pice LOL they used thier PR shots ... Zero actual screen shots etc...
most important of all game play in wich doom III and hl2 are a world apart shooting fish in a barrel in doom III with ai 's dumber then the dumbest thing known to man predictable paths etc... all indoor inviroments etc..... What to know wich game was better? look at who's barrowing from whom? the doom III sequil will feature the HL2 like anti grav gun etc... Now consider the millions on hl players tha have been playing foe th last six years vs a small doom III fallowing.. When DoomIII was done, i was done with the game i will NEVER touch the multiplayer or game again... HL2 and CS:s is something to be engoyed over and over and over....~ Heck to finsh the last have i had to use cheat codes to keep my intest... Alot of players quit and never finshed and never will. they got so ubber board with the game they were coimplete done with it after just a couple levels... Also 99.5% of the time on doom you dealing with ammo lockers and key codes and pass keys... take that out of the game and what do you have? nothing! Also it's bad when you know who the villian is and most of the story line is guessable in the first 15 minutes of play... also the fact that the game is optiumzed for nvidia's shadows , AA, etc.... even running seprate lower bit texture paths etc.. on nvidia cards... didn't help the game any either Doom III get a A for graphics, a D for phisics and F for game play (D adverage) VS Hl2 A- for graphics, A+ for physics , and A+ for game play (A adverage) Far cry looks nice defonsttly better then Doom III but more of a tie with hl2 by a nose

I didn't think he was that biased... he wasn't rating the game, he was rating the engine. Fairly accurate in a lot of his points I suppose.
-but also incomplete

It wasn't bad.. although I pretty much agree with him with all of the results. Pretty much just reinforced what I was already thinking.

how the hell do you explain this.."I haven't had a chance to test out Half-Life 2." Now how on earth do you compare 2 engines used in two games if you didnt even play both games..

maybe he talked to somebody that knew somebody that had played the game
actually, i thought it was a pretty informative article considering the length(which i liked) & the one self admitted limitation(given what it involved do not consider it that significant) it is not & never was intended to be a comparison of d3 & hl2.
