Why Does Windows Still Suck?
So about a year ago, the SO finally upgraded her Net connection to DSL, carefully installed the Yahoo! DSL software into her creaky Sony Vaio PC laptop and ran through all the checks and install verifications and appropriate nasty disclaimers.
And all seemed to go smoothly and reasonably enough considering it was a Windows PC and therefore nothing was really all that smooth or reasonable or elegant, but whatever. She just wanted to get online. Should be easy as 1-2-3, claimed the Yahoo! guide. Painless as tying your shoe, said the phone company. She got online all right. The DSL worked great. For about four minutes. Read More SFGate |

Windows doesn't suck if you know how to use it.

So this is what really happens Miep (lets call her Miep) buys a computer, complete with Win-whatever, and after spending all that dough, she ain't planning to spend more $$$ on silly things like virus-checkers, or a firewall... first time she's online she's on a website she sees an funny Ad for Incrimmi Mail *1) and it's totally free !!! "i'll download that at-once! it looks so cool" she says to herself.. how would she know what she's in for?? on install:installer asks; would you also install a very warm websearch program? (*1) and also totally free, and you will be able to keep track of all cool things on the web ...and we will keep track on you And Again totally free, A handy xAdd-Manager? *1) so we can find the ad's you might need or like for your shopping convienience, and we can use your payed connection to work as an ad-server for us to keep a short story long, indeed within 4 mins her PC is turned into a Spam-Mail server, a Ad server and a Spyware Tracking program Moral: Nothing is free moral 2: anyone can write silly stories, although I didn't made an Advertising for Mac's, cause they suck and are way to expensive *1) name not real to protect the guilty+ they have better lawyers :( Italic = not written, but it should be |

And here I was beginning to think the whole "Windows Sucks" thing was going out of style.

This article is one of the most biased I've ever read. Utter hogwash, to say the least.
I don't adore Windows, it has many problems as an OS. But all OS'es have their problems, including *nix and that Unix ripoff, MacOS. In my book, MacOS is a Unix OS with a nice window manager (Aqua) and some of Apple's libraries and some good ideas concerning its interface. Wow. How exciting... This article is trying to prove that the Macs are "heavenly" and without any problems whatsoever, whereas PCs with Windows crash all the time and are more susceptible to viruses. My PC hasn't been infected with any virus for over 5 years now and the XP and SuSE OSes I've got installed just don't crash. Macs are so hard to upgrade, especially if you want to put ANYTHING that's not made by Apple on them. Plus, almost all of their components (apart from the motherboard and the CPU) come from the PC world... The author of that article should really get his head off his ass... Edit: I totally agree with reply #5 by raskren on MSFN: http://www.msfn.org/comments.php?shownews=11783

And to think this whole Windows rant probably could have been avoided if they, put up a firewall, went directly to windows update, downloaded all critical updates, before they decided to surf all around the net.
And the author has 15 years experience, an advanced user and personally gets 500 spam emails a day

Yep, from here it look like there was definately a problem with the computer chair to keyboard interface.

Wow, I have not seen this much fanboyism in forever. Now, I won't say that Im not guilty of saying Linux is better than Windows... but this guy was frickin' nuts. Don't tell me macs are secure man... Oh yea they run on open source based code, so we took it, made them closed source, and now our software is frickin amazing!! What a load of bull crap; NOTHING!! is secure if it is powered on and connected to the internet. I don't want to be yelled at for putting that here. Come on people, if there is someone dedicated enough and smart enought they will break in no matter what you have set up on your system or what you have running. My moto: "Sir the only secure computer you have on your network is the one unplugged and powered off, yup' the one over there in the corner." Macs are like nice pair of boobies (ahem!)... They are pretty, and fun to play with. But when you need some serious power, when you need to get some serious WORK done, power up that PC with Gentoo running on it. OR When you need to play a game dualboot that PC to Win and have a good time dude. |

You can't judge the quality of an operating system by an idiot user's experience with it. Saying that an idiot can infect windows easily does not logically lead to windows being a bad OS. Any competant user, no matter how small the percentage (don't use percentages if you're going to make them up) can secure a windows box just as well as a linux box. If you wanted to bring the typical idiot user into the picture, that user can't even USE unix. So now you're down to the age old question: is it better to have an OS that you can work in but be vulnerable on, or an OS you can't even use.
Windows is used in the corporate environment for a reason. You can make fun of microsoft all you want but they have a nice product and know how to sell it. This isn't the age of windows 95 and windows ME; you all need to let go of your jokes from back then.

Yep, the kind of friends that keep you busy doing formats and reinstalls, if only you could install something which would shake them warmly by the throat whenever they think of using that fancy mail program, or getting hold of a load of "free" smileys.
