Intel's new Dual-Core Extreme Edition CPU

Seems Intel has started production of its multi-core silicon, and the first Dual-Core CPU we'll see is to carry Intel’s 'Extreme Edition' moniker.

With two physical cores, this CPU is said to support four 'Hyperthreading' threads and we suspect we'll see its first live demo in San Francisco at the Intel Developer Forum towards the end of the month.

We expect this to tie in with the launch of a turnkey system from Dell, since Intel have already got a commitment from Dell in regards to supplying it.

Without doubt Intel will already have working engineering samples of this CPU, and production CPUs will be launched in Quarter 2 2005.

These Dual-Core processors from Intel will not run on any of todays platforms and will require new mainboards based upon its forthcoming 955X Express core logic (codenamed 'Glenwood').

For the mainstream market Intel is also set to introduce mainboards based upon its forthcoming 'Smithfield' chipset (945G) - which features integrated graphics - and 'LakePort' (945P) which requires an add-in graphics accelerator.

That's a good question. I believe WinXP Pro can support up to 2 physical processors, but allow for more logical ones. Hopefully PJ will have the answer since I'm not running a Dual CPU setup with HT like him
